My tweeters or midranges are crackling in my 95-99 BMW 3 Series / M3. What's wrong?

It may not be your tweeter.  Many 3 Series / M3 vehicles of your generation (E36 95-99) with the Harman Kardon end up blowing their midrange drivers, the larger speaker found in the upper section of the front doors.  Odds are about 99% that your midrange is blown if you have crackling noises, etc.

Here's the test -- put on some music that makes the stereo crackle at modest volume, then put your ear directly in front of the speakers in the upper section of your door.  If it's the smaller speaker, it's your tweeter.  If it's the larger speaker, it's your midrange.  If it's both, it could be your amplifier or that both speakers are blown, which is pretty unlikely.

If it is the midrange, you can buy replacements from the dealer, but they are pricey, around $100 each.  Ours sound better and are less expensive -- and more importantly, they're a lot more durable.  Here's a link if you'd like to learn more:

Do keep in mind that if the housings for your midranges are damaged, the replacements from the dealership include new housings but our replacements do not, so you the dealership might be a better option, or you can try to source housings from Bavarian Auto Recycling or another similar used BMW parts company.
