How do I connect an aftermarket subwoofer amplifier to my factory system?

When connecting an aftermarket amplifier to your BMW, you don't even have to leave the trunk. All of the wiring you'll need can be found at the factory amplifier, which usually located on the driver's side outer wall of the trunk, either behind a panel or behind the carpeted wall.

Generally, the following holds true; All E46, E36, X5 Non DSP, E39 5 Series Non DSP, Z4, X3, and pre-2009 E90 and E92 3 Series will use the following wires for your inputs:

Yellow/Black (+) twisted with Brown/Orange (-) - Left Inputs
Blue/Black (+) twisted with Brown/Orange (-) Right Inputs

The above wires can be found twisted together in pairs entering the factory amplifier. You will tap into these wires to provide your new amplifier with an audio signal. A Line Output Converter is required.

The remote turn on lead is almost always a smaller gauge white wire entering the factory amplifier. Again, safely tap into this wire for your new amplifier's remote turn on lead. Always use a digital multimeter to confirm you have the correct wire. The wire should read 12 volts when the radio is on, and a very low voltage (less than 2 volts) when it is turned off.

For more clarification, you can always search our site for a subwoofer system specific to your BMW as there will be a model-specific .pdf guide covering the installation in the "Install Info" tab above the main product image.
