Unfortunately, Your BMW is NOT the Ultimate Sound Machine...

One of the first things most BMW owners notice about their vehicles is the poor performance of the BMW audio system. There is no clear definition at any volume level. The high frequency range is muffled and distant, and bass response is extremely muddy.

Want to Improve Sound Quality Simply and Effectively? Replace Your BMW's Speakers!

To address these problems, BSW developed the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade. Designed as a 100% complete*, plug and play BMW speaker upgrade kit, our Stage 1 Audio Updgrade provides a simple, easy way to replace your speakers and dramatically improve sound quality without having to change any other components in your BMW -- because our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade is engineered specifically for your exact BMW.

The Stage 1 Audio Upgrade delivers striking clarity and definition, more musical detail and life, and improved bass dynamics simply and affordably.

When we designed our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, we made sure the system met several key requirements and features:

100% Stealth
Your interior will appear unchanged, and only you and your passengers will know you've upgraded your audio system.
Greatly improved musical detail & presence
Uses coated natural fiber drivers and silk tweeters that remain distortion free at higher volumes and provides accurate, natural sound.
*Plug and Play!
Features plug and play connectors on each speaker, so all you have to do is remove your original speakers then mount and plug the new ones in. (*Except M Audio vehicles).
More highs, more lows
Produces higher quality sound and a wider range of the bass and treble you're currently missing. (For more bass response, we recommend a BSW subwoofer system).
Engineered for your BMW
It's direct fit speaker replacement -- and each speaker's efficiency and impedance are tuned for perfect harmony with the factory amplifier and head unit.
Reasonable cost, incredible results
Truly enjoy your BMW's stereo without breaking the bank. Even though it's affordable, the Stage one provides real, significant improvements in sound quality.
Complete System*
Replaces every tweeter and midbass speaker in the car and includes everything you need except basic tools. All you have to do is buy, install, and enjoy.
Do-It-Yourself Installation
Includes step-by-step instructions with photos. An afternoon with your BMW and basic tools is all you'll need.
Performance Guaranteed
Unconditionally guaranteed to exceed all your expectations or your money back. No catches, no restocking fees, no funny stuff: you get 30 days to try our products, and if you're not totally happy, send them back for a refund. Click here for more details.

IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTE: For 5 Series / M5 vehicles model year 1999-2000 with the Premium Sound System (DSP) and/or an original BMW phone system, if you install our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, you will lose your phone system functionality. This also applies to model year 1999-2000 5 Series / M5 vehicles with the Premium Sound System (DSP) that have been retrofitted with a newer Bluetooth system (including both those that were equipped with an original phone system and those that weren't).

How and Why the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade Works

The BSW Stage 1 Audio Upgrade was designed for you if you want to enhance and improve your BMW's sound system simply, effectively, and affordably - all through the simple replacement of your factory speakers!

(We should mention that the speakers we use are meticulously engineered and manufactured in Germany - just like your BMW! Using warm, natural sounding silk tweeters and high-resolution midbass drivers, these components have redefined our expectations of exactly how beautiful an OEM speaker upgrade should sound!)

By carefully selecting not only the highest quality speakers, but also very efficient speakers, we replace the weakest link in your vehicle's audio system, the speakers, without necessitating amplifier or head unit replacement. As a result, you get the biggest possible improvement in your BMW's audio system for the least amount of money, time, and effort.

*In '97-'03 5 Series and M5 vehicles, for the front sound stage, in addition to the tweeter and midbass driver, BMW also utilizes a unique 60mm silk dome midrange driver. BSW does not replace this speaker as part of the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade. Why not? Because of the unique size and high quality of this midrange, BSW has been unable to develop or source a speaker that outperforms the original and meets a reasonable price point. Instead, we keep what works! All other speakers, except factory subwoofers, are replaced.

Extremely Detailed Installation Instructions: Provides a guideline for the DIY'ers or professional installers. Step-by-step with photos!

Can I install the Stage I Audio Upgrade in my BMW myself?

Yes, you can! We ship every Bavarian Soundwerks Stage I Audio upgrade with extremely detailed installation instructions with photos and provide telephone support for the process as well. Because it's a simple installation (you're replacing speakers only) with only the most basic of skills required, you can probably do it.

If you're unsure about installing the Stage 1, we always recommend professional installation. Fortunately, because the installation instructions are so detailed and everything you need is included, if you don't feel comfortable with the installation process, any decent car audio shop can perform the installation for you without any difficulty whatsoever - probably for about $200 or less.

Will this work with my Standard, Harmon-Kardon, DSP, or Premium Sound equipped BMW? Will it make a big difference?

Yes, absolutely! In your BMW's audio system, the factory speakers are the weakest link. Even in most "premium" sound systems, the speakers are nothing more than compressed paper and plastic tweeters. Because our Stage I Audio Upgrade replaces that weak link, the speakers, you'll see a VERY nice improvement in sound quality in your BMW, regardless of whether you have the most basic BMW audio system or the nicest.

Does the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade improve bass response?

The answer to this question is somewhat complex. Bass response is limited by amplifier output and the range of music that a smaller speaker can play, so overall bass output (loudness) will not be increased in a significant way with the Stage 1. However, because of the higher quality components used in the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, bass dynamics are improved, meaning you'll be able to enjoy bass notes more.

However, please note that on vehicles equipped with the Premium and / or M Audio sound system, much of the bass response is generated by factory subwoofers which are unaffected by the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade in this regard.

What type of speakers are included in your Stage I Audio Package?

Included in our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade are Rainbow Audio's speakers (with an optional BSW tweeter upgrade), highly respected and revered, made in Germany, just like your BMW. These are very, very high quality speakers, but are also very efficient, meaning they'll run very well using your stock amplifier. For a comparison between the two types of available tweeters to determine which type is right for you based on your vehicle and listening styles, click here.

Do I need to replace my factory amplifier or head unit?

No, you don't. Because we've carefully selected the speakers used in our Stage I Audio Upgrade, they're efficient enough to run off of your stock amplifier and head unit. However, we've designed the Stage I Audio Upgrade with a path for future growth of your system, so if you'd like upgrade your head unit or amplifier down the road, you can.

Will the Stage I Audio Upgrade be visible from within the car or require any permanent modifications?

No, our Stage I Audio Upgrade is completely invisible within the car. Only you and your fellow listeners will know that you've upgraded your stereo since your car will maintain a 100% factory appearance within the vehicle. And, because the Stage I Audio Upgrade requires no permanent modifications to your vehicle, it's completely reversible, meaning you can take your speakers with you if or when you sell your car.

Which speakers are replaced in my BMW?

Your BMW 5 Series / M5 has a 10 speaker system consisting of a 3 way set in the front of the vehicle (tweeter, 2" midrange, and 5.25" midbass driver) and a 2 way set in the rear of the vehicle (tweeter and 5.25" midbass driver). In the Premium Sound System, (DSP) factory subwoofer are present under the rear deck.

However, if you have an M Audio System, your vehicle is equipped with a 10 speaker system consisting of a 3 way set in the front of the vehicle (tweeter, 1" midrange mounted over a 5.25" midbass driver) and a 2 way set in the rear of the vehicle (5.25" midbass driver with tweeter mounted over it). Additionally, M Audio vehicles are equipped with two 10" subwoofers in the rear deck.

Our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade replaces 8 of the 10 interior component speakers - everything except the front midrange drivers since the cost/benefit ratio means they just aren't really worth replacing. In any sound system, the factory subwoofers, if present, will also stay. This setup allows for the simplest installation and biggest improvement in sound quality for the least amount of money.

Will my BMW audio system be louder with the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade?

While the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade provides more detailed highs and richer lows as well as significantly more midrange detail, you won't see any benefits in terms of increased volume from your BMW audio system, though you may find yourself listening at lower volumes due to the improved sound quality. This is because your factory amplifier, which is key in determining the upper volume limits of your BMW audio system, is not replaced.

If you're unsure if you'll need more volume from your BMW's audio system after installing the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, our recommendation is always to purchase the Stage 1 first to improve sound quality, then add an amplifier later if needed. Contact us for more details on amplifier upgrades.

Does the Stage I Audio Upgrade come with a warranty?

Yes, it sure does! The warranty is a 1 year warranty. If you ever have any issues, we're just a phone call away. Please note that this warranty does not cover speakers blown due to excessive volumes or abuse.

Are speaker grilles included?

No, they are not. However, the following locations are reputable BMW salvage yards that should have what you are looking for. They will sell you the whole speaker but it will be FAR less than the dealer. (The dealer does not sell the grills/rings without the speaker.) www.bmrparts.com | www.autobahnparts.com

Let me start off by saying I knew nothing about this stuff. Im fairly handy, and I just wanted better sound in my 1999 528i. I went with the stage 1 audio package using MB Quart speakers, and I couldnt be happier. I have distinct treble in the car now, and the bass is cleaner and tighter than before. It took me an afternoon to install the speakers, and a little help from Jason, but it couldnt be more worth it. Highly recommended!

Today was a good day at the shop. I did a install for a client that purchased a BSW Stage 1 kit for his E39 sedan. He purchased the Rainbow IQ 5.25 comps for the front and the Rainbow Dream 5.25 comps for the rear. He out sourced a Infinity Bass link to fill in the lower octaves of his music. I was throughly impressed with the packaging and install instructions that were very clear and easy to adapt to. The front tweeters came mounted to an aluminum bracket for easy mounting to the stock location. The mids had standard spade terimals that fit the stock leads perfectly. The rear tweeters snapped into the stock location with ease. The rear mids needed to have a fork or ring termianl added to the stock wiring to connect to the speakers. After the install I allowed the system to play for about and hour to get a little bit of break in time, the sound for a drop in speaker setup without any external amplifiers was exteremly impressive. Staging and imaging was on point tonal balance was well above average. It was really a treat to do such a quick and easy install and that would present such amazing sonic improvements so easy. Great job BSW!

was never completely happy with the M-Audio we have. I decided to upgrade to Nakamichi a few years ago with very minimul results. I had replaced all of the speakers except the subs at the time.

After looking into additional upgrades recently, I decided to take a closer look at one of the sponsors here, Bavarian Soundwerks. They had just what I was looking for, a \stage 1\ upgrade which are MB Quart speakers. I actually took the interior apart myself and surprisingly it was not that difficult. The instructions from Bavarian were great including pictures. You will need about 3 to 4 hours to do both front and rear.

Interesting fact. In the M-Audio systems which were available in MY01, 02 and 03 there are no mid-range speakers in the front doors and no tweeters in the back doors. I know that there are openings and grills for these speakers, but there are none there. This was not an accident, but a change BMW
made.

If you get this upgrade, get the panel removing tools they sell as well. The cost is 19.95 and well worth it. I have placed an order for the new sub and amp that will be arriving soon and will give you an update in the next couple of weeks.

All in all a great upgrade for around 400. Some may not want to upgrade the subs, but I am looking forward to it. So you could say this is a plug for one of our sponsors. I always like to support those who are supporting us and it is even better when they are offering great products at reasonable prices. I would highly reccomend Bavarian Soundwerks.

I just did my 01 m5 with m audio upgrade using mb quartz speakers. Very satisfied with the upgrade. Install was pretty smooth and the instructions were some of the best I have ever seen from an aftermarket company, Only glitch I found: On the front speakers the instructions said to add three spacers under the speakers, but, my door panels would not go on b/c the mid that is bridged across was too tall. Used one spacer and it fit. My speaker had a larger lip to it than the one in the photo or the oem speaker. Sound is much improved. I also took the time to glue down the rear deck insulation that caused vibrations in the sub. BSW is a class act with great service. Thanks.

Im an electro-acoustic engineer for a pro-audio company and my livelihood
depends on audio details and accuracy. Its probably no surprise that I was
quite disappointed with the audio system when I purchased a used 540iA 2003
E39 (DSP) Sport, as it was lacking image, bass(!), and just had poor overall
sound quality and accuracy. Micah at BSW recommended the Stage 1 package
and 12\\ deck mounted system as a substantial upgrade. Since my background
is mostly consumer based products, I was somewhat skeptical in this
investment for a car, but I went ahead with the package knowing they had a
good return policy.

WOW!! Not only was I happy with the ease of
installation, the final result was absolutely stunning. The accuracy in the
highs and mids were definitely noticeable (A/B a good recording a la David
Matthews, Death Cab, Pearl Jam, or Black Eyed Peas recording and its easy
to notice), but the subwoofer took it to another level. My car is now my
audio nirvana - my home stereo cannot reproduce the tight bass and overall
fidelity I get in the cabin...my long commute in Chicago is actually a good
thing now! The sub easily mounted to my rear deck, and the mechanical
coupling with the chassis seems to really improve the acoustic
response...and even better, it doesnt send more energy outside the car than
in - I dont get looks from cars at stoplights wondering whos the audio
offender (and there are laws in effect that will ticket people for
excessive sound pressure levels soon).... you wont find this an issue with
this system. If youre looking for crappy bass that bleeds outside the
car...go elsewhere - this system is seriously amazing.

In short, the installation was simple (one minor question I had was quickly
resolved by BSW support), the amp tweaking was simple, and the value and
result well exceeded my expectations. My co-workers and friends are very
impressed, and Im now a BSW fan for life!!!

Just got the Stage 1 package from BSW (with the IQs up front), 12\ sub suspended from the rear deck in trunk and DICE iPod unit installed in my 01 530i.

All I can say is WOW. The system sounds excellent and the DICE iPod connector works flawlessly. Sound at all volumes is crisp and clear... no pops, hisses, unintended noises, etc. The speakers are super efficient just as Kobe at BSW said. I first asked about replacing the stock amp. Given the horrible sound and volume of the stock (non-DSP) system I thought a new amp might be required to get decent sound. But I was advised to keep the head unit and amp from the stock system and see how things sounded at that point. I could always add one later. I still was a little concerned but trusted Kobes experience. Well, my concerned vanished 30 seconds after the system was installed. Plenty loud, plenty clear.

The 12\ sub is a must if your trying to get a good, solid sound. It has great depth with out being \muddy\... it really fills the cabin and complements the front speakers.

Now... about the service. I must have talked to Kobe and Micha a dozen times in three days of making a decision. The conversations were never rushed. They explained the options, benefits, cost, etc. in detail and never got tired of my questions (at least they acted like they never tired!). They never tried to upsell me and they were always available to talk.

Bottom line... great sound, excellent service, completely factory look and worth the investment.

Got BSWs speaker system. After fussing around about whether to attempt a DYI, gave it to a pro installer.

Wanted to tell you its a fabulous upgrade and improves the sound 100 percent over M-Audio, IMHO. Not a bass fanantic, so didnt do the sub-woofer upgrade. The M-Audio subs are fine for my needs.

Thanks again for a terrific system.

This sound upgrade is AWSOME! I am slowly turning into an audiophile because when I listen to other systems that are not as clear and crisp as this one....I cant bear to listen! These speakers really bring out the best in vocals and stringed instruments I love the piano notes! As far as bass is concerned you do need a subwoofer of some type....I chose to go with ksw1 powered sub from kenwood...which the guys in the shop were gracious enough to help me with the wiring over the phone, even though I didnt get thier sub-package. It was way cheaper and certainly a match made in heaven! If you can afford BSWs up-grade I have no doubt that it will deliver for you. My system is a dream to listen to and I can wait until BSW comes out with their factory amp replacement. If your thinking of purchasing one of these sound upgrade you should be totally confident buying from this great company!

Had the Stage 1 IQ line in the front + 10\ Sub-woofer package installed by these guyz two weeks ago. Took my time to sample different CDs before writing the review and Im glad I did. Like any good system, play it for a couple of hours to open up the sound. Heres my review:a. BSW their showroom: they are the only guyz I would trust with my 530i Sedan E39. Im glad I had them put everything in Jason did a very clean and professional install. Checkout his instruction videos on Youtube and youll see what I mean. I comparison shopped at some well known custom audio shops in Atlanta, and in my opinion, they had a cheesy/shady feel - I wouldnt leave my car with these guyz. But, the moment I walked into the BSW showroom and talked to some of the owners, I could tell these guyz are true audiophiles sound engineers you could hang out with all day and talk about audio. They look more like engineers than sales ppl!b. Stage 1 sound: I love the sound from the Stage 1 speakers IQ upgrade was well worth it I now can hear notes/instruments that I didnt know were there before. Brings out the littlest detail clearly and no clipping throughout the sign-wave I used the Autosound 2000 My Disk to measure the performance/improvement. Dont expect louder sound though because of the better detail, you dont need to blast the stereo anymore.c. Subwoofer sound: if youre considering whether to get the sub-woofer or not I would highly recommend it. Im used to free-air subs, so wasnt sure about how well the enclosed sub would sound sealed in the trunk. I worried for no reason though plenty of thump! I had the remote knob installed trust me, you want this 40 addition! and most of the time I have it below the power. The only complaint is that I can tell the base is coming from the back. But unless you modify your car to put 6x9s or Subs in the front doors, youll have to go with the sub in the trunk. One final thought make sure your sound source is clean ie. original CDs, or Lossless MP3s. My regular MP3 CDs 128kbps or lower that sounded fine before does grave injustice to the new system, specially the sub it makes the sound detritions more prominent!Overall, I couldnt be happier we now take the longer route home, just to finish listening to the CD. I love my CDs again!

You have another very satisfied customer. I expected it to be good, but not this good. I am very pleased and did the install myself. Instructions were great. I highly recommend a friend for the back deck speakers. The sounds is amazing. What a difference between stock dsp and this!! I am considering upgrading the subs as well. It still lacks that tight punch that you get from sub woofers. Those are not replaced as part of this upgrade. I feel like it is a shame to have such great highs and mids and not upgrade the subs. Thanks guys!

I purchased the Stage I kit w/ IQ Line since the clarity of the speakers I had in the car were not to my liking. When the package arrived everything was packed exceptionally well and nothing was out of order.

The instructions were easy to follow for the most part. The rear deck instructions, however were a little off. There was no mention of the rear deck having some plastic push fasteners that hold the rear deck onto the metal seat back not a big deal, but just a nit pick. One problem you might have with the install of the rear speakers is when you are swapping out the speakers, the new rear speakers only fit in one way into the housings.

Once everything was installed the sound is much clearer. The new speakers audio quality is like night and day compared to the stock setup. This is one of the best audio upgrades Ive made since BSW has done all the leg work in finding the right speakers saving me the trouble of reading and guessing and hoping what I buy will work and sound great.

I just completed the installation of the Stage 1 audio system with IQ speakers in my 2003 530i. I always considered the original system non-DSP to be only adequate and I wanted to upgrade without affecting the head unit or any intrusions on trunk space. Im pretty good mechanically with the car so I felt very capable of doing the work myself. I was in no particular rush and I used both the written instructions online and the videos that are also available. I think the videos are especially helpful as you actually see how everything comes apart and goes back together. Despite the very good instructions, it took me every bit of 4-5 hours for the complete kit installation. I was a little intimidated with taking the whole back seat, rear deck and C-pillar trim out to get to the rear speakers but the instructions were very clear and other than being time consuming about 2 hours just for the back speakers, it was fairly straightforward.

As for the soundI can definitely tell an improvement in the clarity and smoothness of the vocals and drums. There isn a lot more bass how much bass can you get our of 5.25 speakers but what is there sounds pretty good. This was definitely a nice upgrade and I now have a good idea as to what to get my son for birthday or X-mas for his E46.

I had a couple of speakers that were buzzing and one that was cutting out on my E39, so I decided to replace them all. I got the IQs with my Stage 1 and did all of the work myself. The videos were incredibly helpful. It took me some time, but I had no problems. Im really pleased with the sound. Its a good step up from the stock speakers. I think there is a little less bass in the front, but it is much clearer and musical. I also got the sub kit to fill in the bottom end see my review over there. I think the sub made another huge improvement.
I got great support with my questions from the guys at BSW.
Overall, Im quite pleased.
Id buy them again if I had to.
