Unfortunately, Your BMW is NOT the Ultimate Sound Machine...

One of the first things most BMW owners notice about their vehicles is the poor performance of the BMW audio system. There is no clear definition at any volume level. The high frequency range is muffled and distant, and bass response is extremely muddy.

Want to Improve Sound Quality Simply and Effectively? Replace Your BMW's Speakers!

To address these problems, BSW developed the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade. Designed as a 100% complete, plug and play BMW speaker upgrade kit, our Stage 1 Audio Updgrade provides a simple, easy way to replace your speakers and dramatically improve sound quality without having to change any other components in your BMW -- because our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade is engineered specifically for your exact BMW.

The Stage 1 Audio Upgrade delivers striking clarity and definition, more musical detail and life, and improved bass dynamics simply and affordably.

When we designed our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, we made sure the system met several key requirements and features:

100% Stealth
Your interior will appear unchanged, and only you and your passengers will know you've upgraded your audio system.
Greatly improved musical detail & presence
Uses coated natural fiber drivers and silk tweeters that remain distortion free at higher volumes and provides accurate, natural sound.
Plug n'Play!
Features plug and play connectors on each speaker, so all you have to do is remove your original speakers then mount and plug the new ones in.
More highs, more lows
Produces higher quality sound and a wider range of the bass and treble you're currently missing. (For more bass response, we recommend a BSW subwoofer system).
Engineered for your BMW
It's direct fit speaker replacement -- and each speaker's efficiency and impedance are tuned for perfect harmony with the factory amplifier and head unit.
Reasonable cost, incredible results
Truly enjoy your BMW's stereo without breaking the bank. Even though it's affordable, the Stage one provides real, significant improvements in sound quality.
100% Complete Package
Replaces every speaker in the car and includes everything you need except basic tools. All you have to do is buy, install, and enjoy.
Do-It-Yourself Installation
Includes step-by-step instructions with photos. An afternoon with your BMW and basic tools is all you'll need.
Performance Guaranteed
Unconditionally guaranteed to exceed all your expectations or your money back. No catches, no restocking fees, no funny stuff: you get 30 days to try our products, and if you're not totally happy, send them back for a refund. Click here for more details.

IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTE: For X5 vehicles model year 1999-2000 with the Premium Sound System (DSP) and/or an original BMW phone system, if you install our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, you will lose your phone system functionality. This also applies to model year 1999-2000 X5 vehicles with the Premium Sound System (DSP) that have been retrofitted with a newer Bluetooth system (including both those that were equipped with an original phone system and those that weren't).

How and Why the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade Works

The BSW Stage 1 Audio Upgrade was designed for you if you want to enhance and improve your BMW's sound system simply, effectively, and affordably - all through the simple replacement of your factory speakers!

(We should mention that the speakers we use are meticulously engineered and manufactured in Germany - just like your BMW! Using warm, natural sounding silk tweeters and high-resolution midbass drivers, these components have redefined our expectations of exactly how beautiful an entry level, OEM upgrade type of speaker should sound!)

By carefully selecting not only the highest quality speakers, but also very efficient speakers, we replace the weakest link in your vehicle's audio system, the speakers, without necessitating amplifier or head unit replacement. As a result, you get the biggest possible improvement in your BMW's audio system for the least amount of money, time, and effort.

Can I install the Stage I Audio Upgrade in my BMW myself?

Yes, you can! We ship every Bavarian Soundwerks Stage I Audio upgrade with extremely detailed installation instructions with photos and provide telephone support for the process as well. Because it's a simple installation (you're replacing speakers only) with only the most basic of skills required, you can probably do it.

If you're unsure about installing the Stage 1, we always recommend professional installation. Fortunately, because the installation instructions are so detailed and everything you need is included, if you don't feel comfortable with the installation process, any decent car audio shop can perform the installation for you without any difficulty whatsoever - probably for about $200 or less.

Will this work with my Standard or Premium Sound equipped BMW? Will it make a big difference?

Yes, absolutely! In your BMW's audio system, the factory speakers are the weakest link. Even in most "premium" sound systems, the speakers are nothing more than compressed paper and plastic tweeters. Because our Stage I Audio Upgrade replaces that weak link, the speakers, you'll see a VERY nice improvement in sound quality in your BMW, regardless of whether you have the most basic BMW audio system or the nicest.

Does the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade improve bass response?

The answer to this question is somewhat complex. Bass response is limited by amplifier output and the range of music that a smaller speaker can play, so overall bass output (loudness) will not be increased in a significant way with the Stage 1. However, because of the higher quality components used in the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, bass dynamics are improved, meaning you'll be able to enjoy bass notes more.

However, please note that on vehicles equipped with the Premium sound system, much of the bass response is generated by factory subwoofers which are unaffected by the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade in this regard.

In general, for a significant upgrade in bass response, we recommend a subwoofer system.

What type of speakers are included in your Stage I Audio Package?

Included in our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade are BSW's proprietary speakers, designed and optimized right here in the USA for use in your exact model BMW. These are very, very high quality speakers, but are also very efficient, meaning they'll run very well using your stock amplifier and maximize the performance of your audio system without complicated overhauls or installations.

Do I need to replace my factory amplifier or head unit?

No, you don't. Because we've carefully selected the speakers used in our Stage I Audio Upgrade, they're efficient enough to run off of your stock amplifier and head unit. However, we've designed the Stage I Audio Upgrade with a path for future growth of your system, so if you'd like upgrade your head unit or amplifier down the road, you can.

Will the Stage I Audio Upgrade be visible from within the car or require any permanent modifications?

No, our Stage I Audio Upgrade is completely invisible within the car. Only you and your fellow listeners will know that you've upgraded your stereo since your car will maintain a 100% factory appearance within the vehicle. And, because the Stage I Audio Upgrade requires no permanent modifications to your vehicle, it's completely reversible, meaning you can take your speakers with you if or when you sell your car.

Which speakers are replaced in my BMW?

Your BMW X5 has a 10 speaker system consisting of a 3 way set in the front of the vehicle (tweeter, 2" midrange, and 5.25" midbass driver) and a 2 way set in the rear of the vehicle (tweeter and 5.25" midbass driver). In some sound systems, (DSP, etc.) a factory subwoofer is present.

Our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade replaces all the interior component speakers. The factory subwoofer, if present, will also stay. This setup allows for the simplest installation and biggest improvement in sound quality for the least amount of money.

Will my BMW audio system be louder with the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade?

While the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade provides crisper highs and richer lows as well as significantly more midrange detail, you won't see any benefits in terms of increased volume from your BMW audio system, though you may find yourself listening at lower volumes due to the improved sound quality. This is because your factory amplifier, which is key in determining the upper volume limits of your BMW audio system, is not replaced.

If you're unsure if you'll need more volume from your BMW's audio system after installing the Stage 1 Audio Upgrade, our recommendation is always to purchase the Stage 1 first to improve sound quality, then add an amplifier later if needed. Contact us for more details on amplifier upgrades.

Does the Stage I Audio Upgrade come with a warranty?

Yes, it sure does! The warranty is a 1 year warranty with Rainbow brand speakers. If you ever have any issues, we're just a phone call away. Please note that this warranty does not cover speakers blown due to excessive volumes or abuse.

What part of the Stage 1 is Plug and Play?

Installation of the X5 Series Stage 1 is 100% plug and play.

Do you sell the speaker rings/grills?

Unfortunately no, however the following locations are reputable BMW salvage yards that should have what you are looking for. They will sell you the whole speaker but it will be FAR less than the dealer. Unfortunately the dealer does not sell the grills/rings without the speaker.

I had Bavarian Soundwerks install my set since Im in Atlanta and they did an amazing job. Jason and Micah over there are good people.

I got the MB Quart upgrade and the difference is day and night.
The stock speakers had muddy bass and virtually non-existant treble. Once you get them out and look at them, its easy to see why. They look so bad! Cheap, paper cones and tiny magnets.

In short, the MB Quarts are great. Detailed but not overbearing treble. Tight, punchy and defined bass. My X5 does not have the sub but even without that, this upgrade is definitely worth it.

I had the Stage 1 and 10\ subwoofer package installed last week. So after a weekend listening to it, here is my thought about the products. Overall I am happy with the result. My Xs audio system comes alive. I particularly like the sub. Its deep, accurate and powerful. The speakers are clear especially the tweeters. All of my friends listen to it and said it sounds awesome. I feel a 10\ sub is definitely enough for a X5 but its just my personal opinion. I listen mostly to Trance and Hip-hop. Now even though the speakers and subs are good on their own, I do feel there there is a gap between them. I believe the reason is that the sub is powered by an ED amps while the speakers are powered by the factory amp. As good as it sounds right now, I feel I can get more details out of those MB Quartz by adding an aftermarket amp. And thats what I am going to do.

So I dedicated yesterday to the Stage 1 speaker install and can say Im stoked with the results. Clear instructions, good pictures, details on how to undo all the blind fasteners and connections. I took 2 hours to do the first door & dash mid, but my speed increased after that and I spent 6 hours total including garage clean up and a car washing. Half way thru the install I played some Steely Dan, shifting left (BSW) and right (stock) and the difference was obvious. My new BSW midbass/tweeter combo has much better clarity and high end than the stock system, and can play louder before distorting. The stock speakers sound muddy, with terrible midrange.

BSW instructions called for a glue gun, and I begrudgingly dropped the 10. Id never used one in a car audio install before. But it quickly became indespensible for many uses. I affixed drivers into their housings, repaired door panel anchors that popped off during the job, battened down wire leads with glue blobs to ward off future rattles- hot glue rocks.

If theres a down side to the system, Id say theres a bit less bass. What the new drivers make, however, is much more accurate than the stock drivers low end. Four 6-1/2\ (or oversize 6-3/4\) midbasses would be nice- but Im sure they dont fit the stock housings and would require a lot more custom work and time. Overall, Im very happy. Great sound for the price, excellent instructions made it a straightforward install. Thanks BSW!

The stock 6 speaker stereo in the Aussie dellivery X5 3.0d was pretty dissappointing. After owning the car for only a few weeks I decided I had to upgrade.

I fitted BSWs stage 1 MBquarts with BSW midranges. The results were fantastic with much better definition and elimination of a really annoying cone resonance that the stock speakers had.

I did notice that the stock amp was having troubles keeping up with the MBquarts at high volumes. BSW were very helpful dicussing options and put together a amp and plug and play cable package. The MBquarts really came alive with the extra power. I also added a BSW stealth sub at the same time which really lifted the complete sound.

Installation instructions from BSW were easy to follow. Thanks for supporting the X5world community guys and keep rolling out your great products.

Three weeks ago I finally completed my enhancements to my 2004 x5 4.4i (with NAV and DSP) and want to share my experience with others who may be considering an upgrade. Here are the upgrades I made together with my comments on their performance:

1. Knocked out all 10 stock speakers and replaced them with Rainbow Audio speakers offered by BSW + midranges sourced and offered under BSW brand. For main drivers I went for a better version than ones listed under Stage 1 upgrade, for additional 30 per driver. Factory CD Changer and Amp were left intact.

At this stage the improvement from stock system was HUGE. I am a serious audio enthusiast and to me the stock system was simply unlistenable and a headache catalyst. The Rainbows removed the entire muddiness and gruff out of the system improvement in highs were signficant, with crisp vocals and excellent rendering of strings. What was more surprising was the low end I disconnected the junky factory subwoofer and found the bass quality of the drivers to be truly impressive. However I do think that the way the factory amp crossover is designed, you will not get optimal sound w/o a sub. Before I move on to the next upgrade details, I want to specifically commend the BSW guys for delivering an \\excellent\\ midrange set. They excelin voice rendering. I think my installer screwed uo by bypassing the crossovers that were provided with the install kit, unless i am unclear abt the technicalities, but as is, they sound fantrastic - especially when I listen to jazz or new age vocals.

I have no experience with MB Quarts, but I can tell you that Rainbows will impress you. My higher end Rainbows were the most expensive option, but I am extremely pleased with my investment and think every penny was well spent. Caveat though, I still have to address the brightness issue with my midranges, which I think is an install issue.

2. Next step was the subwoofer upgrade from BSW. I will keep it short - if you change your speakers and do not change your sub, it makes no sense, as you dont get optimal results. But if you go all the way, you will be amazed with what you hear. BSW should be proud of creating this niche product that fits like a glove into your beloved BMW and sounds like heaven. This 8\\ sub is fantastic expensive but, hey, try creating a stealth setup like this from scratch and see what you might spend...and what you get.

3. Last was DICE + Speckdock. In short, i will call it \\DICEY\\. Its a disastrous product that insults and abuses the otherwise fantastic system in my X5. When I swapped my CD Changer with the DICE, all the muddiness and headache returned with a bang. Mind you, all my music in my iPod is in lossless format cut straight from my own CDs. After this dissapointment I switched back to my CD Changer. This convinced me that I would rather live with the limitations and inconveniences of my CDC than to destroy the potential of my otherwise great system. My personal belief is that DICE is a great concept that is executed very poorly, and is targeted at \\interface\\ junkies who cant tell sound quality from a rats ass. Probably just the kind of people who use stock headphones with their iPod? Jokes apart, I think the poor electronics and the really long run of cheap cable from front to back are to blame for the dismal performance. I am returning them.

Finally, I went out and bought a Sony Cassette adapter for the iPod. Hear this the cassette adapter delivers \\far superior\\ output than the Dice. It hides neatly behind the Nav screen, the wire can be concealed (i havent had the time to figure that but surely will), and for 30 you are able to keep your CDC and date your iPOD. This combination rocks. Believe me and try it, you will NOT regret. Since I have no experience with FM transmitters, I cannot offer you an A/B comparison, but to my discerning ears the cassette adapter is a great solution.

I hope this helps you prospective buyers out there. Go deck up your beloved darling and enjoy the drive. Ciao.

Im happy to report that my Stage 1 installation was a success! I must say that the improvement in sonic quality was tremendous compared to original equipment albeit the sound is now a bit on the bright side. Still I found myself breaking out the Stereophile, Sheffield, Chesky, and VTL test and sampler CDs I used to listen to quite a bit with my Proac Response 3s (not a fair comparison I know). For the environment they have to operate in, the Stage 1 speakers fared well.

Man, all you had to say when i asked if i could use some of my stock
compnents(Focal) was...\that will mean a LOT more work, we engineered this kit to a tee, trust us\...something like that? My lord you guys cease to amaze me! This kit is georgous, really excited to install it. You prove again that you guys have got \all your ducks in a row\ and have yet to give me something to complain about(i love to complain...happiness bores me, hahaha). Ill let you know when it is in and the Little River Band are in their second set and looking awkward all standing on my dash. How many employees do you have? Wanna plan ahead for all the thank yous and hand shakes i have to dish out when i visit. Kudos! And kudos again!!

A major improvement over the existing speakrer system within my X5. A noticable difference exists between the current sound quality with the upgraded speakers and the existing factory supplied speakers. The installation process was very straight forward and the detailed instructions included were exceptionally helpful. The installation was certainly easier having someone to help assist in the removal of the door pannels.

I purchased a 2003 X5 about a month ago after having a 2007 Avalanche. I have to say, the Bose system in the Chevy is light years ahead of the BMW. The stock DSP system is literally pain to my ears at least at medium-higher volumes. After reading MANY posts about upgrades, I decided the BSW Stage 1 kit was a must.

Installation took me about half a day. I did the passenger side first to compare the stock vs new, and then completed the driver side after a few test CDs. My first impressions were that the new speakers didn add that much. It could be that my stock speakers were in good shape and I didn have any problems like pooping or stuff like that to begin with. But after some tuning on the equalizer, I was able to achieve a a better sound that I was looking for. I still think the tweets are too bright for my tastes so I may try to put a little paper towel square in front of the tweeter to muffle it a bit. That way I still get the treble from the mids without turning it down on the EQ.

Overall, I think the Stage 1 kit is very nice an put together well. If you are wanting to upgrade from the stock speakers its the only way to go. If money is an issue though, I would honestly just go with the x108 sub which I installed at the same time. The sub gives you the best bang for buck. What changed my mind was that BSW offered $100 off if I bought the sub and Stage 1 at the same time, so I thought it was worth it to know my system was all upgraded. The Stage 1 is better than the stock speakers so Im happy overall that I got the kit.
