Want to add more life and energy to your music WITHOUT giving up your trunk? Add a BSW subwoofer system!

Designed as a 100% complete, easy to install BMW subwoofer upgrade kit, our d110 BMW E39 Subwoofer System provides a simple, easy way to add a subwoofer (or replace your existing subwoofer) and dramatically enhance the impact, liveliness, and energy of your audio system without having to change any other components in your BMW -- because our d110 subwoofer system is engineered specifically for your exact BMW.

the how and why of bass in your BMW

Fully 1/3rd of all recorded music is below 80Hz (this is called bass!) Almost no interior component speaker can reproduce sound below 80Hz without high levels of distortion (some CAN reach to around 60Hz, but that's really the lower limit). The cheap paper drivers BMW uses in their audio systems are no certainly no exception to this rule.

Why? High output bass production requires that a speaker physically moves a great deal of air relative to what's required for higher frequencies. This air movement is accomplished in either or both of the following two ways:

  • High Excursion: Excursion refers to how far a speaker can move in or out from its resting state. The smaller the speaker, the larger the amount of excursion required to produce bass output -- and vice versa. However, a small driver with high excursion is far less efficient than a larger driver with lower excursion (require TONS of power from the amplifier) and is very impractical in a car audio situation due to the space required in front of such a driver to accomodate the movement. (It's also difficult to design a very high excursion driver that remains accurate at the limits of its movement).

  • Large Cone Surface: As the cone surface area of a speaker increases, the more air the driver can move -- and the more efficient a driver becomes relative to a speaker with smaller cone surface area. However, the additional mass of such a driver requires more power and a more stout motor structure (the components that control the speakers) to keep the driver controlled and accurate.

Both solutions do require substantial power output from the amplifier driving them, but power can be expensive. For cost savings reasons, manufacturers will produce a larger coned driver out of lightweight material (i.e. paper) to minimize power requirements. Unfortunately, the resulting lightweight subwoofer is flimsy, and when combined with low power yields muddy, fuzzy bass at moderate volumes and distortion at high volumes. This is PRECISELY the case in BMW's premium systems equipped with a subwoofer.

And if you don't have the premium system, because your stock amp and speakers (and even high quality component speakers and an aftermarket amp) are small in size, share the same lightweight construction, and are low in power, you'll get the same fuzzy bass, just less of it.

And so, an effective, high power subwoofer solution is needed. But with the BSW d110.e39, it doesn't have to come with sacrifices.

Is this EVERYTHING I need?

Yes, we include absolutely every single component you need! There is absolutely nothing else you need to purchase outside of the BSW 10" d110 Subwoofer System to install and enjoy our system.

Can I install the d110 Subwoofer System in my BMW myself?

Yes, you can! We ship every BSW Subwoofer System with extremely detailed installation instructions with photos and provide telephone support for the process as well. Because it's a simple installation (you're basically just tapping one audio signal and getting power from the battery - that's it!) with only the most basic of skills required, you can probably do it. However, if you feel unsure, we always recommend professional installation. Fortunately, because the installation instructions are so good and everything you need is included, if you don't feel comfortable with the installation process, any decent car audio shop can perform the installation for you without any difficulty whatsoever - probably for about $150 or less.

Will this work with my Standard or Premium Sound equipped 5 Series / M5? Will it make a big difference?

Yes, absolutely! In your BMW's audio system, even the Harman-Kardon systems, bass response is terrible. Because our d110 Subwoofer System provides as little or as much additional bass response as you want, you'll see a VERY nice improvement in sound quality and low-end frequency response in your BMW, regardless of whether you have the most basic BMW audio system or the nicest.

My trunk is completely sealed. Will I really be able to hear the bass in the cabin?

Yes, definitely. Because we specialize in BMW's, we understand that the trunk areas are very frequently 100% sealed from the interior of the car, and as a result, this important consideration was taken in mind during every step of the design process. This means that our d110 Subwoofer Systems are high-output and will absolutely produce enough output (volume) to really hear, feel, and truly enjoy! In fact, the single 10" system is one of our highest output subwoofer package and what we recommend for those that want the most possible bass OR those with a very well sealed trunk such as the 5 series.

What components are included in your 10" Deck-Mounted Subwoofer System?

Click the "What's Included" tab above for an itemized list of the components used in this subwoofer system.

Why don't you use more common name brands like JL, Infinity, etc.?

We haven't used more commonly known "name brand" components in our subwoofer systems because we wanted to provide the absolute best system possible for the most reasonable price to our customers. Frankly, much of what you pay for when you go "name brand" is just that - the name. Our testing revealed that the components from the smaller companies that we're using in our subwoofer systems provide a MUCH better value because you aren't paying for a name. You're paying for the quality of the components and engineering, and as such, for the same amount of money you get so much more performance, output, and clarity. So, in short, we use the components we've selected because they give you, the customer, the very best "bang for the buck."

Do I need to replace my factory amplifier or head unit?

No, you don't. We include a new amplifier to power the subwoofer included in the d110 Subwoofer System. If you have your factory head unit, we also include all the necessary wiring you need to integrate this system with your factory head unit. This system also works with all aftermarket head units as well!

Will the d110 Subwoofer System be visible from within the car or require any permanent modifications?

No, our d110 Subwoofer System is completely invisible within the car. Only you and your fellow listeners will know that you've upgraded your stereo since your car will maintain a 100% factory appearance within the vehicle. And in the trunk, because the BSW d110 Subwoofer Enclosure used has a stealth, clean look, it's hard to tell there's a sub system in your trunk, either!

No permanent modifications are required.

Does the BSW d110 Subwoofer System fit with a strut brace?

Yes! We have verified fitment with the Dinan 5 Series / M5 strut brace. We have not tested other braces on the market, but due to the 1/2" clearance between the brace and subwoofer enclosure, it is very likely this system will fit with all other braces on the market.

Does the BSW d110 Subwoofer System come with a warranty?

Yes, it sure does! The warranty is 2 years, parts only, on all components of the d110 Subwoofer System. If you ever have any issues, we're just a phone call away. Please note that this warranty DOES NOT cover subwoofers blown due to abuse.

Just wanted to give you guys some feedback on my recent purchase and install of the subject components.a lot of bucks but every bit worth it. The M5 Beast sounds @###ing unbelievable!!! I admittedly had my doubts about the install and overall sound quality, but this setup has exceeded all of my expectations.

The first weekend after I returned from my trip (to find several packages waiting for melike Xmas I tell ya) I gingerly installed the speaker upgrades and took out the factory subwoofer enclosure (none M-Audio) and mounted the subwoofer. Just like you said, the instructions were very clear and straightforward, took my time with the door clips, and encountered absolutely zero problems. I was so pumped up by the install, I threw some tunes in, remembering that I didnt have either the factory or BSW sub hooked up at this pointbut was a little concerned about the fullness of the sound. Admittedly, I am not much of an audio expert, particularly when it comes to tuning and understanding how all the components work in harmony. I do however have a very sensitive ear and love my musicthe sound was a noticeable improvement (particularly the mids), but still not what I was ultimately hoping for. Thinking that I understood what the subwoofer would bring to the table in terms of license plate rattling bass, I thought I might be in for some overall disappointment, based on the type and variety of music I generally listen too.

On to week two: After the Denison guys put the fear of god in me about disconnecting my negative battery cablesomething about radio security codes, I confirmed with the dealer that they stopped doing that around 1999 or so. Armed with this info I killed battery power to the vehicle and commenced install of the amp, and Ice-Link/Ipod interface this morning. I really took my time, and am big, BIG, on a clean, factory looking install.hence I was in this thing for around 3 to 4 hours or so, counting beer breaks. The wiring was straightforwardand like you said the Bimmers are built like tanks and it was easy to access paneling and compartments to make this a clean, tight install. I took out the factory CD, mounted the IPOD cradle in the same area and the amplifier to the back of the left, fold down rear seattight fit (I mounted it vertically like the instructions suggested) and need to disconnect the RCA inputs prior to folding the seat forward, but in this configuration it makes tuning/servicing the amplifier very easy. It looks so clean.a nice BSW logod subwoofer in place of the carpeted factory enclosure.minor loss of room there, and the amp and all wiring is out of sight!

It took me two attempts to get my system to recognize the IPODhowever in hindsight I think I just didnt have it fully connected in the cradle the first time. My M5 didnt give me the No CD or No Disk message, per the instructions (when power is first reconnected, but the IPOD isnt inserted) rather it said CD 1 and Track 99, in any case it worked just as advertised. Powers up and down with the vehicle ignition and factory CD controls cycle through the playlists as promised.

The Sound, my god, the fricking sound is unbelievable. Again, Im not an audio expert and just assumed that the subwoofer would really be just for hard bass.and wouldnt contribute much to a fuller sounding Bimmer. I threw in some Alice N Chains, a little SoundGarden, some Filter, then switched over to some Train and Matchbox Twenty, and finally my favorite Jazz station on the radio.in all aspects the sound quality is absolutely fantastic.

All I can say guys is thank you so much for your expertise, patience, customer support, professionalism, and for putting a product on the market that fixes the abysmal sound in otherwise the most fantastic automobile I have ever owned.

My only suggestions (and believe me this is digging real, REAL deep as to inspire perfection)

1). If you could put a little more detail into the DSP and non-DSP wiring instruction (i.e. for less experienced people) it may help a few folks with less audio experience.not a problem on this end, I just had to go over it a few times to make sure I new which factory wires were in fact positive and negative since I have DSP.

2). An extra 2-3 inches of power cable on the amp cord from the battery connection to the fuse would enable mounting the fuse assembly to the bracket adjacent the CD.this looks real slick, mine was just a bit short but turned out just fine.

3). No radio codes in the 2000 on BMW M5s, disconnect the cable without worry. It even kept my Home Link and memory settings in the seats.which was a surprise, just reset the date/clock and rolled.

Man, thats it.and that is really digging.

Im an electro-acoustic engineer for a pro-audio company and my livelihood
depends on audio details and accuracy. Its probably no surprise that I was
quite disappointed with the audio system when I purchased a used 540iA 2003
E39 (DSP) Sport, as it was lacking image, bass(!), and just had poor overall
sound quality and accuracy. Micah at BSW recommended the Stage 1 package
and 12\ deck mounted system as a substantial upgrade. Since my background
is mostly consumer based products, I was somewhat skeptical in this
investment for a car, but I went ahead with the package knowing they had a
good return policy.

WOW!! Not only was I happy with the ease of
installation, the final result was absolutely stunning. The accuracy in the
highs and mids were definitely noticeable (A/B a good recording a la David
Matthews, Death Cab, Pearl Jam, or Black Eyed Peas recording and its easy
to notice), but the subwoofer took it to another level. My car is now my
audio nirvana - my home stereo cannot reproduce the tight bass and overall
fidelity I get in the cabin...my long commute in Chicago is actually a good
thing now! The sub easily mounted to my rear deck, and the mechanical
coupling with the chassis seems to really improve the acoustic
response...and even better, it doesnt send more energy outside the car than
in - I dont get looks from cars at stoplights wondering whos the audio
offender (and there are laws in effect that will ticket people for
excessive sound pressure levels soon).... you wont find this an issue with
this system. If youre looking for crappy bass that bleeds outside the
car...go elsewhere - this system is seriously amazing.

In short, the installation was simple (one minor question I had was quickly
resolved by BSW support), the amp tweaking was simple, and the value and
result well exceeded my expectations. My co-workers and friends are very
impressed, and Im now a BSW fan for life!!!

Had the Stage 1 IQ line in the front + 10\ Sub-woofer package installed by these guyz two weeks ago. Took my time to sample different CDs before writing the review and Im glad I did. Like any good system, play it for a couple of hours to open up the sound. Heres my review:a. BSW their showroom: they are the only guyz I would trust with my 530i Sedan E39. Im glad I had them put everything in Jason did a very clean and professional install. Checkout his instruction videos on Youtube and youll see what I mean. I comparison shopped at some well known custom audio shops in Atlanta, and in my opinion, they had a cheesy/shady feel - I wouldnt leave my car with these guyz. But, the moment I walked into the BSW showroom and talked to some of the owners, I could tell these guyz are true audiophiles sound engineers you could hang out with all day and talk about audio. They look more like engineers than sales ppl!b. Stage 1 sound: I love the sound from the Stage 1 speakers IQ upgrade was well worth it I now can hear notes/instruments that I didnt know were there before. Brings out the littlest detail clearly and no clipping throughout the sign-wave I used the Autosound 2000 My Disk to measure the performance/improvement. Dont expect louder sound though because of the better detail, you dont need to blast the stereo anymore.c. Subwoofer sound: if youre considering whether to get the sub-woofer or not I would highly recommend it. Im used to free-air subs, so wasnt sure about how well the enclosed sub would sound sealed in the trunk. I worried for no reason though plenty of thump! I had the remote knob installed trust me, you want this 40 addition! and most of the time I have it below the power. The only complaint is that I can tell the base is coming from the back. But unless you modify your car to put 6x9s or Subs in the front doors, youll have to go with the sub in the trunk. One final thought make sure your sound source is clean ie. original CDs, or Lossless MP3s. My regular MP3 CDs 128kbps or lower that sounded fine before does grave injustice to the new system, specially the sub it makes the sound detritions more prominent!Overall, I couldnt be happier we now take the longer route home, just to finish listening to the CD. I love my CDs again!

I replaced a custom 12 box with the 10 E39 box and couldn be more pleased. BSW makes a great product- it is well made with good craft and also a good price- better than I got for the original custom box. It now sits up off the floor so I have my trunk back! The box and hardware fit very well- exactly as described, The 10 size provides strong/ tight bass- I am very pleased ... was originally concerned about downsizing from the 12 sub but actually like this set up better.

After owning the Stage I speaker upgrade for about a year, I decided it was time to upgrade the bass in the system. So, at first I looked around pricing all the components and realized I had basically priced redoing the entire audio system and that was out of the question. So, I came back here and ordered the sub woofer system since I liked the speaker upgrade a whole lot and the reviews for the sub system were all very positive.

I ordered the system and patiently waited. It took a little longer than I expected for it to arrive and would have liked a little more status from the website as to what was being done to my order like Awaiting Parts or Building Kit. When the parts arrived they were meticulously packaged like I expected and everything was in good order with a few extra parts thrown in.

Installing the system however, is not for a novice even though the instructions are good they do not give much direction as to how someone should mount the amp and run wires around the trunk. I decided on mounting the amp on the passenger side fuse access door by fabricating backing brackets. Once the amplifier was mounted, I proceeded to splice wires and found the barrel crimps to be decent but a few of them just didn seem to want to work, so I had to pull out the trusty electrical tape and soldering iron. Tapping the +12V from batter was cinch and tapping ground wasn too bad either although I had to use a self tapping screw and washer to get a good ground connection on the ground wires ring.

Installing the speaker box itself is a two person job and it wasn exactly clear that the holes on the rear deck you use are the square holes and not the round ones. After that little snafu though it fit snugly against the rear deck and I was able to run the wires from the amplifier to the sub against the sub box and the rear deck.

Once I turned it on and there were no problems, I proceeded to tune. I set the Cutoff to ~120Hz and set the gain to about 3 and have been very happy with this setting. Enough bass to make an impact but not enough to make everything rattle and hurt. I know the amp has a lot more in it because I turned it up some just to see what it could do.

As with the Stage I speaker upgrade kit I am very impressed with the kit as a whole and even though I didn look at the instructions too much some examples on how to mount the amp in the car might be helpful.

I got the sub kit at the same time as the stage 1 kit see my review over there. I did the install myself and it was mostly straight forward. I struggled a bit mounting the amp because I have DSP and the CD changer. I ended up putting it in the middle of the rear seat firewall. My tip is too look behind the carpeting to see where the screws will attach.
Everything else went really well and without problem.
Adjusting the sub was easy. Follow the directions, make smaller adjustments, and use many types of music.
Im really pleased with how well it fills in the bottom end of the stage 1 kit. I use the my DSP eq to bump it up a notch or two when I want it to kick. You can feel it in your seat if you want.
A great product with great service from BSW!
