the how and why of bass in your BMW

Fully 1/3rd of all recorded music is below 80Hz (this is called bass!) Almost no interior component speaker can reproduce sound below 80Hz without high levels of distortion (some CAN reach to around 60Hz, but that's really the lower limit). The cheap paper drivers BMW uses in their audio systems are no certainly no exception to this rule.

Why? High output bass production requires that a speaker physically moves a great deal of air relative to what's required for higher frequencies. This air movement is accomplished in either or both of the following two ways:

  • High Excursion: Excursion refers to how far a speaker can move in or out from its resting state. The smaller the speaker, the larger the amount of excursion required to produce bass output -- and vice versa. However, a small driver with high excursion is far less efficient than a larger driver with lower excursion (require TONS of power from the amplifier) and is very impractical in a car audio situation due to the space required in front of such a driver to accomodate the movement. (It's also difficult to design a very high excursion driver that remains accurate at the limits of its movement).

  • Large Cone Surface: As the cone surface area of a speaker increases, the more air the driver can move -- and the more efficient a driver becomes relative to a speaker with smaller cone surface area. However, the additional mass of such a driver requires more power and a more stout motor structure (the components that control the speakers) to keep the driver controlled and accurate.

Both solutions do require substantial power output from the amplifier driving them, but power can be expensive. For cost savings reasons, manufacturers will produce a larger coned driver out of lightweight material (i.e. paper) to minimize power requirements. Unfortunately, the resulting lightweight subwoofer is flimsy, and when combined with low power yields muddy, fuzzy bass at moderate volumes and distortion at high volumes. This is PRECISELY the case in BMW's Premium (DSP) Audio System in the BMW X5.

And if you don't have the Premium System, because your stock amp and speakers (and even high quality component speakers and an aftermarket amp) are small in size, share the same lightweight construction, and are low in power, you'll get the same fuzzy bass, just less of it.

And so, an effective, high power subwoofer solution is needed. But with the BSW x108, it doesn't have to come with sacrifices.

My X5 was fitted with a prototype of this setup by BSW and all i can say is that i am very pleased with the sound and setup. I wasnt sure what to expect when i dropped off my car, but i was amazingly surprised with the solid bass levels, stealth installation, and amp setup. The 8\ sub unit fit neatly into the compartment with the X5 specific custom-built enclosure.

Its been two weeks since ive had the unit and have had no rattling or unexpected vibrations while driving. Unfortunately I dont have DSP, but i can make some slight adjustments to the bass and treble and that works just fine. Im no audio expert but the sound is incredible compared to my stock unit with no sub.

When i came to pick up the X5, Jason of BSW played a cd of The Crystal Methods Vegas and I was blown away with the bass levels in the tracks. Both Jason and Micah of Bavarian Soundwerks have been great to work with and I highly recommend this system and for the price it can be beat.

Yes, this will replace the original subwoofer in the DSP (Premium) sound equipped X5 and add a more powerful amp to drive the sub. It represents a VERY big improvement in performance in that application.

I recommend removing your socks to prevent them from being knocked off by the xh108 system!!

I installed this system in my DSP equipped X5 a week ago and I still cant believe the single 8\ subwoofer pounds this much! I used to have the Infinity Basslink in my X5 (10\ sub plus 10\ passive radiator) and this single 8\ definitley hits much harder. The amplifier that comes with the xh108 system is well matched to the stock DSP system as well it provides tight and accurate bass with the gain turned all the way down and an astounding thump with the gain turned up a bit. And the best part is that it takes up NONE of the precious trunk space that the X5 never really seems to have enough of! Unless you want to break the dB record at your local car audio competition, I cant see why you would need more bass than what the xh108 can deliver.

This is a beautifully engineered system and I was able to install it easily, however I do have a bit of experience installing electronics in cars. If you have ANY doubts dont be silly and put your vehicle at risk a professional should be able to install it for a few extra bux while you wait.

So if you are wondering if you should install this in your X5, just get it already ... you wont regret it!!!!!!!

I installed the new BSW sub-woofer system in my 02 X5 and I wanted to let you now that I am very satisfied with the results. Earlier I had already installed the speaker upgrade from BSW and the new sub-woofer really made the entire sound system come alive. There is no rattle or weird noises and the sub and amp combination carry a punch. I was a little nervous to install it myself since I had never done anything like that before, but your pictured instructions were clear and easy to follow and it only took me a couple of hours to complete. The whole thing was worth the wait and every penny I spent with your company. It is good to see companies deliver what they promise. Keep up the good work!

Here are a couple of pictures of my X5. Now my HAMANN-MOBILE is complete!

Thanks again.

I really enjoy my music. The stock system in the X5 3.0d Aussie delivery was very basic. After only a few weeks I had to upgrade as the stock sound was so poor.

First installation was the BSW stage 1 with BSW mids which made a huge difference. The only thing missing was the low frequency bass lines in my favourite CDs. Listening to CDs like Enyas Watermark was missing all the bass detail.

BSW, to their credit responded to the desires of many X5 owners and developed their steath sub.

The results have been dramatic filling out the sound completely. Despite its size the BSW sub has a very strong accurate bass. Unlike some subs which just rumble away with monotone bass, the BSW sub has an accurate sound following the pitch of the lower frequency notes. I even got some organ music cranked up just to test it.

Thanks to the BSW guys for developing this product and supporting the X5world community.

Chris.

Three weeks ago I finally completed my enhancements to my 2004 x5 4.4i (with NAV and DSP) and want to share my experience with others who may be considering an upgrade. Here are the upgrades I made together with my comments on their performance:

1. Knocked out all 10 stock speakers and replaced them with Rainbow Audio speakers offered by BSW + midranges sourced and offered under BSW brand. For main drivers I went for a better version than ones listed under Stage 1 upgrade, for additional 30 per driver. Factory CD Changer and Amp were left intact.

At this stage the improvement from stock system was HUGE. I am a serious audio enthusiast and to me the stock system was simply unlistenable and a headache catalyst. The Rainbows removed the entire muddiness and gruff out of the system improvement in highs were signficant, with crisp vocals and excellent rendering of strings. What was more surprising was the low end I disconnected the junky factory subwoofer and found the bass quality of the drivers to be truly impressive. However I do think that the way the factory amp crossover is designed, you will not get optimal sound w/o a sub. Before I move on to the next upgrade details, I want to specifically commend the BSW guys for delivering an \excellent\ midrange set. They excelin voice rendering. I think my installer screwed uo by bypassing the crossovers that were provided with the install kit, unless i am unclear abt the technicalities, but as is, they sound fantrastic - especially when I listen to jazz or new age vocals.

I have no experience with MB Quarts, but I can tell you that Rainbows will impress you. My higher end Rainbows were the most expensive option, but I am extremely pleased with my investment and think every penny was well spent. Caveat though, I still have to address the brightness issue with my midranges, which I think is an install issue.

2. Next step was the subwoofer upgrade from BSW. I will keep it short - if you change your speakers and do not change your sub, it makes no sense, as you dont get optimal results. But if you go all the way, you will be amazed with what you hear. BSW should be proud of creating this niche product that fits like a glove into your beloved BMW and sounds like heaven. This 8\ sub is fantastic expensive but, hey, try creating a stealth setup like this from scratch and see what you might spend...and what you get.

3. Last was DICE + Speckdock. In short, i will call it \DICEY\. Its a disastrous product that insults and abuses the otherwise fantastic system in my X5. When I swapped my CD Changer with the DICE, all the muddiness and headache returned with a bang. Mind you, all my music in my iPod is in lossless format cut straight from my own CDs. After this dissapointment I switched back to my CD Changer. This convinced me that I would rather live with the limitations and inconveniences of my CDC than to destroy the potential of my otherwise great system. My personal belief is that DICE is a great concept that is executed very poorly, and is targeted at \interface\ junkies who cant tell sound quality from a rats ass. Probably just the kind of people who use stock headphones with their iPod? Jokes apart, I think the poor electronics and the really long run of cheap cable from front to back are to blame for the dismal performance. I am returning them.

Finally, I went out and bought a Sony Cassette adapter for the iPod. Hear this the cassette adapter delivers \far superior\ output than the Dice. It hides neatly behind the Nav screen, the wire can be concealed (i havent had the time to figure that but surely will), and for 30 you are able to keep your CDC and date your iPOD. This combination rocks. Believe me and try it, you will NOT regret. Since I have no experience with FM transmitters, I cannot offer you an A/B comparison, but to my discerning ears the cassette adapter is a great solution.

I hope this helps you prospective buyers out there. Go deck up your beloved darling and enjoy the drive. Ciao.

Awesome set up from a great company! Only took me 1.5 hours to install. The sub sounds incredible, not too much and not too little.
Thank you BSW!!!!

After reading many reviews on about the x108 subwoofer, I decided to try it out in my 2003 DSP equipped X5. Before installing, I tried a bunch of CDs with various artists to get a baseline of how the stock sub sounded. For overall bass, the stock sub has almost zero hump and lots of midrange fill. Its better than nothing, but not nearly as clean and clear as the new BSW x108 sub is.

Ive only had the x108 for about a week now so I haven tweaked it too much yet break-in period, but overall it has improved the sound system. My only gripe is that I wish it were a 10 instead of an 8 driver. Considering, though that my X5 still looks stock and sounds better than before, its still a good upgrade especially if you don have DSP. Oh, and the kit was perfect. Everything you need to install is there, including zip ties, fuse and all the upgraded wires needed. The Fosgate amp included also has plenty of power for this sub. All-in-all a very nice kit.
