DSP was an audio option available on 5 Series, X5, X3, Z4, or 7 Series BMWs between 1996 and 2008. If you have a 3 Series or M3, you DO NOT have DSP. Some (but not all) vehicles equipped with DSP may require a special "DSP adapter" to install certain aftermarket accessories. Read on. The majority of these vehicles have the factory coaxial cable present (required for audio transmission), but we have seen the occasional car that does not have the cable pre-installed. If that's the case, you will need to purchase (order) the cable from your dealer (BMW part number 65128360756, which is ~$28) as the kit does not come with this.

Does my 5 Series, X5, X3, Z4, or 7 Series have DSP?

• 5 Series, X5, 7 Series - Vehicles without navigation will have a button clearly marked "DSP". If your car has navigation, there will be a "DSP" function in the main menu settings.
• X3, Z4 - As you scroll through your audio functions (bass, treble, etc), there will be an option that states either "DSP", "Concert", "Hall", "Jazz" or something along those lines.
• If you do not have DSP, you DO NOT need the DSP Adapter.

If I do have DSP, how do I know whether or not I need the additional DSP adapter?

• If you have a '99-'01 7 Series, you most definitely need the additional DSP adapter.
• If you have a '97-'01 5 Series, you most definitely need the additional DSP adapter.
• If you have a '02-'03 5 Series, you MAY need the DSP adapter (see below)
• If you have a '00-'01 X5, you most definitely need the additional DSP adapter.
• If you have a '02-'06 X5, you MAY need the DSP adapter (see below)
• If you have a 2003 Z4, you most definitely need the additional DSP adapter.
• If you have a '04-'09 Z4, you MAY need the DSP adapter (see below)
• If you have a '03-'09 X3, it is highly unlikely that you will need the additional DSP adapter.
